A Vision Takes Shape
We're back at Thomas's maisonette in Hamrun, Malta. This time we're on the garden side of the property. Here Thomas reveals the transformation of a stripped-bare structure into a unique home through careful restoration and creative reuse of materials. His story begins with the rediscovery of Maltese tiles, some over a century old, which he salvaged from various locations. These geometric patterned tiles from Qormi, in monochromatic tones, set the aesthetic tone for this side of the home, reflecting a more subdued and masculine vibe.
The Bathroom: A Mosaic of Memories
One of the most striking rooms is the bathroom, which Thomas has lovingly restored using reclaimed tiles from diverse sources, including Birgu and an orphanage in Hamrun. The use of salvaged British-era white square tiles adds a historical layer to the space. Thomas’s dedication to sourcing materials is further evident in the details, such as the Art Deco clamshell lights found at the Birgu market. To maximize natural light, he installed a steel and glass door between the bathroom and bedroom, incorporating fluted frosted glass panes cut and fitted with the help of a neighbor. These thoughtful touches combine to create a space that is both functional and full of character.
The Garden: Small but Mighty
Despite its modest size, the garden is filled with oversized plants like Monstera and giant cacti, some rescued from a soon to be demolished garden in Saint Julians. Thomas recounts the effort of transporting these massive plants with the help of friends and a pickup truck. The garden, although tiny, is a green sanctuary where he enjoys the beauty of his oversized plants and the tranquility of nature.
An Eye for Unique Finds
Throughout the home, Thomas’s knack for finding and repurposing unique items is evident. From a stage production frame turned into a library mirror with a marble shelf, to a green wooden balcony banner repurposed as a bed canopy, each piece tells a story. His creative process involves trial and error, and he admits to the necessity of being selective, often selling items that don't quite fit the overall vision.
The Heart of the Home
In the kitchen Thomas balances practicality with style. The kitchen, with its robust IKEA units and a colorful carpet, contrasts with the breakfast room's more traditional setup. A round table with folding leaves is both functional and space-saving.
Cherished Connections
Among Thomas’s prized possessions are pieces with personal significance, such as an Italian design classic coffee table by Guzzini, gifted by a dear friend, and a carved wooden coffee table top now displayed on the wall. These items not only enhance the home’s aesthetic but also reflect Thomas’s connections and memories.
A Continual Project
Thomas’s maisonette in Hamrun is a home where every piece has a past and every corner holds a story. His journey shows that with creativity, patience, and a bit of elbow grease, even the most overlooked materials can be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful.
