Restoration and Layout

Despite its modest size, the home demanded extensive work, which was especially carried out during the pandemic’s lockdown. The ground floor is a long corridor leading to a small garden, with a beautiful Maltese staircase at the centre. The staircase splits the home into two sections, left and right, each with three rooms. One side faces the bustling town street, while the other overlooks the garden, providing a dynamic living environment.

A Collector’s Paradise

For Thomas, home decor is about the thrill of the hunt and the stories behind each item. His approach is not about matching colour palettes but finding inspiration in unexpected places. Many of his possessions are reclaimed, turning potential waste into little treasures. This philosophy is evident throughout his home, from the stunning headboard made from a discarded peacock carpet to the unique bedside tables crafted from a library filing system.

Creative Repurposing

Thomas’s flair for repurposing is a highlight of his decor. Brass hooks originally meant as curtain tie-backs now serve as coat hooks by the door, while mid-century opaline lights line the downstairs corridor, creating a whimsical lighting feature. His kitchen units, originally painted baby blue, now shine in a vibrant yellow, complemented by a modern marble countertop.

A standout piece in his home is a bookcase rescued from a semi-demolished house, a testament to his dedication to preservation. This bookcase, along with a carpet from his grandparents, adds layers of personal history and charm.

Living History and Personal Stories

Thomas’s home is filled with items that have their own histories, like the theatre seats from the Salesians Theatre, which evoke memories of his pre-lockdown performances. His collection of pineapple-shaped lights, discovered at various markets, brings a playful yet cohesive touch to his decor.

Even the smallest details, like the tiny kitchen table sourced from a collector in Gozo, show his commitment to preserving and repurposing. This approach not only enriches his living space but also connects him to a broader narrative of sustainability and creativity.

In Thomas Camilleri’s maisonette each piece tells a story, creating an environment that is as vibrant and dynamic as Thomas himself. His dedication to reclamation and his eye for the unique have turned this small 1800s space into a remarkable showcase of maximalism and eclecticism. Through this tour, we see how a space can be transformed into a deeply personal and meaningful reflection of its owner’s journey and passions.
